The Good Food Box Program (GFB) is a food security initiative administered by the Northwestern Ontario Women’s Centre since 2005. To raise funds in support of our GFB program operations, the Women’s Centre participates in fundraising efforts throughout the year.
The GFB has an opportunity with the United Way to raise significant funds in support of food security! Thanks to a generous United Way anonymous donor, every dollar raised between now and February 28, 2025, will be matched – up to $25,000.
The current economic circumstances have resulted in an unprecedented increase in the use of emergency and food security programs in Thunder Bay and District. Many people in our community cannot afford to eat well or even regularly. Food and operating costs for the organizations that address these gaps are also increasing beyond the available funding. You can read more about these issues in the two reports below from the Thunder Bay and District Health Unit:
- Hungry for Change in the Thunder Bay District (2024) reported that 19.5% of households in Thunder Bay District are food insecure and not able to access healthy food. The Cost of Eating Well in the District of Thunder Bay (2024) outlines how household food insecurity is a growing public health concern in Ontario and across Canada.
Without immediate action, access to food may be reduced for those in our community who count on this critical support.
Take Action Today & Benefit From a 2024 Tax Credit
In addition to making an immediate difference in the lives of those facing food insecurity, the extension of the CRA charitable donation deadline to February 28 means you may claim your gift on your 2024 tax return. With federal and provincial tax credits, you could receive as much as 44% of your donation back at tax time. A $1,000 gift, for example, could cost as little as $560 after tax credits – but, thanks to the matching gift, provide $2,000 worth of food support to those in need.
This is the ideal moment to renew your support!
Families in Thunder Bay are counting on us – and we are counting on you. By making your gift today, you will ensure that food programs like the Good Food Box remain available to those who need them most.
Please don’t wait. Take action now and double your impact before the February 28 deadline.
Thank You!
In addition to supporting the GFB Program, you are also supporting our hardworking local growers & producers. In 2024, the GFB spent $40,488.96 on locally grown and produced goods for our local fundraiser and food security boxes! Buying local supports our producers and strengthens the capacity of our local food system.
