In November 2025, as part of the 16 Days of Activism, OAITH released their critical examination of mainstream news’ framing of Ontario femicides. This report is a summary of the way mainstream media reported on Ontario femicides during 2024-2025. A total of 43 femicides were examined by studying 114 news items from three mainstream media sources (national newspapers, local newspapers, and TV news).

OAITH has been tracking femicides in Ontario for 35 years and are aware of more than 1,120 victims of femicide whose lives have been taken and in most cases, by men who knew them. These numbers are a shocking reminder of the ongoing oppression, hatred, inequity, human rights violations and ongoing system failure that has led to these femicides.  Read their full media release here

Femicide is commonly defined as the intentional murder of women because they are women. OAITH’s femicide definition includes a gender-based killing of a woman, child, trans woman, 2-Spirited Person, or gender non-conforming individual where a man has been charged in relation to the death.
