From the Chanterelle Alliance:

After a whirlwind 36 days, and an election campaign that ranged from cost of living to housing, to the US trade war and threats to Canada’s economy, job security and sovereignty, the incredibly narrow race culminated in re-election for the Liberal party, with 169 seats – just three short of a majority. Click here for an in depth analysis of the federal election results.

For feminist organizations, and especially those who remember the systematic defunding of our sector during the Harper era, these election results bring many mixed emotions. Although the previous Liberal Government had been pushing a strong feminist agenda, Prime Minister Carney’s decision to remove the WAGE Minister from his cabinet in March has been an alarming sign for feminist organizations, and advocating for the reinstatement of this critical position remains an ongoing and urgent priority.

As we continue to navigate an affordability crisis further exacerbated by the ongoing trade war with the U.S., it is imperative that this new government prioritizes the advancement of gender equality and invests in strong social supports for people in Canada. The voice of our sector is crucial to ensuring our country does not backslide on hard-won rights for women and gender-diverse people in this pivotal moment.

With Parliament slated to resume in late May, this is an opportune moment for us to convene, strategize and mobilize our advocacy demands. Join The Chanterelle Alliance on May 22 from 2-3pm EST to discuss your post-election thoughts and the policy priorities your organization is seeking to advance with the re-elected Liberal government. By identifying shared priorities, we aim to foster connections among members and create opportunities for collaboration to strengthen our collective impact. This informal discussion will be bilingual with simultaneous two-way interpretation.
