No one should have to choose between buying menstrual products and other basic necessities. Period Promise is an initiative that empowers community at all levels, to collectively support and learn about period poverty. For the month of March, the United Way of Thunder Bay is partnering with a variety of workplaces & across Thunder Bay & District to raise awareness and collect menstrual hygiene products to help address period poverty in our communities.
The Northwestern Ontario Women’s Centre is participating as a collection stop and a donation recipient. Consider purchasing a box (or two) of products the next time you are at the pharmacy or grocery store and drop it off at one of our participating community collection sites, such as the NOWC.
A 2023 public opinion research survey conducted by Environics Research on behalf of Women and Gender Equality Canada found that:
- One in six (17%) Canadians who menstruate have personally experienced period poverty; this rises to one in four (25%) if their household earns less than $40,000 a year.
- One in five (20%) who menstruate say they may not afford period products at some point in the next 12 months, and 7% say this is very likely. Six in ten of the first group agree that inflation has increased the likelihood of not affording period products.
