From EGALE:
Misinformation is shaping public conversations in Canada, and its impacts are being felt by communities already facing rising hate, discrimination, and barriers to safety. That is why Egale Canada has released Rights, Safety, and Belonging: Public Perspectives on 2SLGBTQI Inclusion in Canada, a new national opinion polling report exploring how people in Canada view human rights, misinformation, healthcare, education, recreation, and belonging for 2SLGBTQI communities. Commissioned by Egale Canada and conducted by Environics Research, the report finds that 90% of Canadians are concerned about the impact of misinformation and disinformation. Yet only 39% feel confident in their own ability to identify it, and just 17% believe people generally know how to spot it.
The findings also show strong public support for many of the values that ground 2SLGBTQI inclusion, including fairness, safety, access to healthcare, inclusive education, and the freedom to live openly and authentically. Key findings include:
- 83% of Canadians agree that healthcare should be guided by science, not political opinion
- 81% agree that nobody should be denied access to the medical care they need because of who they are.
- 71% agree that decisions about gender-affirming care for young people should remain between young people, their doctors, and their families
- 78% agree that everyone should be able to participate in recreational sport, regardless of their gender
At the same time, many Canadians recognize that there is still more work to do to ensure 2SLGBTQI people can live safely and freely in their communities. This report provides valuable insights for policymakers, educators, advocates, community organizations, and anyone committed to building a safer, more informed, and more inclusive Canada.
