Digital spaces are central to how many young people build relationships, explore identity, find community and access information. While these spaces can foster belonging and connection, they can also reinforce harmful gender norms, facilitate cyberviolence and amplify misogynistic and other harmful content.

Against a backdrop of heightened concern about online misogyny, gender-based violence and the influence of harmful digital communities, there is an urgent need to understand how prevention efforts can meaningfully engage boys and young men in the spaces they already occupy.

This special event brings together three organizations advancing work at the intersection of boys and young men, digital spaces and gender-based violence prevention. Drawing on approaches that include online community building, youth-centred education, digital media and public engagement, presenters will share insights from their work to foster healthy masculinities, strengthen young people’s critical engagement with online content and contribute to safer and more inclusive digital communities.

SPEAKERS

David Garzon is the Director of Marketing and Communications at White Ribbon. David is in charge of developing and implementing strategic marketing and communication initiatives to engage various partners, promote philanthropic efforts, and raise awareness about the organization’s goals and impact. David holds a bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Latin American and Caribbean Studies from York University, a certificate in Critical Reflections on Masculinities from the Center for Social Research, Technology and Capacity Building.
Estelle Cazelais has been working as a sexologist since September 2015. The sexological issues in which she is most interested are feminist struggles as well as notions of sexual and gender diversity. For several years now, they has dedicated their work to the understanding of the social and psychological impacts of gender stereotypes in human development, to the promotion of rights and the recognition of people belonging to sexual and gender diversity, to the teaching of notions of sexual consent and to the fight against sexual violence.
Stephanie Wright leads Next Gen Men’s Youth Lab: NGM Alliance, a Discord community for boys and nonbinary youth, and Rites of Passage Expeditions (ROPE), summer canoe and hiking trips in the Canadian backcountry. With a passion for rethinking what youth engagement can look like in the digital age, she leads a team that builds trust and relationships with boys and young men so they can form deeper connections with themselves and real friendships with each other, online and in person.
