Ahoy! We’re Leeks in the Boat from the THUNDER BAY GOOD FOOD BOX PROGRAM and we’re sending out an urgent S.O.S. (Support Our Services) as part of the United Way’s Great Lighthouse Rescue 2026.
Our theme for this year’s promotional video is “Don’t let the LEEKS in the system sink us”: when 22% of households in Thunder Bay and the region are food insecure (TBDHU, 2025) and fresh vegetables cost on average 8% more year to year, from March 2025 to 2026 (CBC, April 2023), it is more important than ever to support food security programs in your community!
Watch our promotional video here to follow along as our Detective uncovers the mystery of “Where are the Leeks?”
The Thunder Bay Good Food Box (GFB) Program is a monthly fruit and vegetable distribution program that aims to increase access to fresh and affordable produce in neighbourhoods, housing buildings, organizations, and participating First Nations year-round. We call these many locations our Host-Sites. In 2024, the Good Food Box packed and distributed 6,451 boxes of fresh fruits and veggies, all of which went to families in Thunder Bay and the region.
This program has a BIG BEET-ING HEART: we are a small but mighty food security program! The Good Box is celebrating 20 years of bringing good food to our community. Over the years, we have gained support from local farmers, producers, makers, and growers, as well as volunteers for each monthly pack, sustaining donors, and community partners.
Alongside castaways from @uwaytbay funded agencies, we’re asking for donations to help us continue to serve the 500+ families who rely on the Thunder Bay Good Food Box Program each month for access to healthy food.
Please give! Our Leeks will be stranded at the Lighthouse until we reach our goal of $7,000. These funds are critical in ensuring we can continue to provide affordable and low-barrier food access in Thunder Bay and the region!
