• Have you been abused or are you experiencing abuse by your partner or ex-partner?
  • Have you been involved in the Ontario family law system, or are you dealing with the system now?

If you’re a woman or gender-diverse person who has experienced intimate partner violence and is or was involved with family court, lawyers, family court support workers and other legal professionals, we want to hear from you!

We invite you to contribute to new research to better understand what women and gender-diverse people face and need with respect to their family law issues (i.e., parenting, financial support, separation etc.) and the Ontario family law system (i.e. lawyers, judges, legislation, court, outcomes etc.).

The information you provide will be used to improve your experiences and outcomes within the family law system.

How to take part in the research:

  • Participate in a one-on-one interview online or in-person where you can share your thoughts in a private, safe, and supportive environment (approximately 1 hour). To participate, either:
  1. Express your interest in the survey by selecting that option during completion, or
  2. Contact Dr. Mavis Morton at m[email protected] or Luke’s Place at [email protected] or 905-728-0978 ext. 232

Participation is available starting from March 13th, 2024

Who is doing the research?

Luke’s Place, https://lukesplace.ca is a not-for-profit Ontario family law organization that provides services to survivors of intimate partner abuse who have family law needs. They also train other people in Canada who also do this work. Luke’s Place is working with Dr. Mavis Morton, a professor with the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, University of Guelph. The research is funded by the Department of justice Canada.

This project has been reviewed and approved by the University of Guelph Research Ethics Board to make sure it follows the rules for conducting research involving people (REB#23-09-004).

How information will be used

What we learn from this study will help Luke’s Place to improve how we serve women and gender-diverse people and their children and will inform the future training Luke’s Place designs and provides to other agencies and legal professionals.
