Good Food Box Program Summer Assistant Position 

This position runs for 16 weeks, starting immediately, at 28 hours per week at $15 per hour 

The Northwestern Ontario Women’s Centre is seeking a summer student to assist with the operation of our local food security program, the Thunder Bay Good Food Box.  The Good Food Box is a fruit and vegetable distribution program that aims to increase access to fresh (and often locally grown) food year round to people who may be food insecure. It is a non-profit, volunteer supported, food security initiative that allows individuals to pre-purchase a monthly, affordable box of fresh fruit and vegetables that is delivered directly to their neighbourhood. 

The employee will assist the Good Food Box Program Coordinator with all aspects of the Program, including but not limited to taking and making food orders, recording data on spreadsheets, coordinating food division (unloading cases of food, dividing and packing), distribution of food boxes, community promotion of program, education of participants, interacting with retailers/ growers / customers and volunteers. This job requires the ability to lift boxes weighing 20 – 40 lbs repeatedly twice per month.  Most main tasks will require in-person attendance; some data entry can occur remotely if required.  PPE is supplied. 

Skills and Experience Required: 

Interest in food security efforts; good numeracy and communication skills; the ability to take direction, and work with a diverse community of volunteers.  Ability to adhere to COVID protocols when working with others. Familiarity with Excel Spreadsheets an asset.  

This job requires the ability to lift boxes weighing 20 – 40 lbs repeatedly twice per month.  Most main tasks will require in-person attendance; some data entry can occur remotely if required.  PPE is supplied.
