Thanks to the efforts of our fundraising committee, the Northwestern Ontario Women’s Centre Bursary will soon be available for award to a deserving student! The bursary was first established in 1987 with a donation of $2,182.46 in honour of Millie Barrett, who will be featured in the book Forty Fabulous Feminists in Northwestern Ontario. Recently, the fund balance fell below the amount required for LU’s Office of Student Awards & Financial Aid to make a disbursement.  However, after a couple of bake sales engineered by the Women’s Centre fundraising committee, and a few generous donations (including $1500 from the Gender Issues Centre!), the Millie Barrett/Women’s Centre Bursary is once again active.

Both the Office of Student Awards and the Women’s Centre Board of Directors felt that the wording of bursary criteria needed revision and updating.  The following are the terms as they will appear in the Calendar:

“Awarded to a female student enrolled in any program, who has attended a high school in Northwestern Ontario, and who is studying and/or involved in feminist issues. Preference will be given to mature students, women with dependents, First Nations, Inuit and Metis women and women who identify as LGBTQ.”
